Hoyo Goyama (神山鳳陽)
Houyou GOYAMA (1824 - 1889) was a prominent Japanese calligrapher and composer of Chinese poems in the Meiji period.
His name was 述, his Azana was Tamenori or Kookina, and he had aliases such as 三野々史・三野老人・至明 other than Hoyo. His common name was Shiro. He was born in Mino.
Brief Biography
He was born in Mino and moved to Kyoto, and ran his own private school and frequently communicated with scholars. He had an extensive knowledge on sutra, and excelled in Kanshi and Sho. In 1869, he was invited to Ritsumeikan, the private school of Kinmochi SAIONJI and became a teacher with Tenka EMA, Aizan TANIGUCHI, Seison HIROSE and Tessai TOMIOKA. He later became an instructor of the Kamigyo Dai Sanjukkumi Elementary school (now known as Kyoto City Ryuchi Elementary School), which was found in coutecy of Naotaka KUMAGAI from Kyukyodo.
His poems were contained in "Meiji Sanjuhakke Zekku" (released in 1871) or "Kouchou Hyakke Zekku" (released in 1885). He also exhibited 'Sozenhi' and 'Shuou Shokyojo' for the exhibition of Hojo (copybook printed from the works of old masters of calligraphy).
